Tonight, a show I choreographed for a group of high school students will open. The experience has been incredibly rewarding, and I am reminded that being able to work in the arts is truly a pleasure, gift, and opportunity. The moments that impacted my growth and development are now being shared and passed along to today’s students, and it is really moving to see the process coming full circle.

When I take the time to reflect on my career and where it has been and where it is going, I love listening to Jonathan Larson’s Why from the musical Tick, Tick…Boom. The song is about how his childhood and adolescent experiences in the theatre impacted his decision to stay involved in the arts. The core concept of the song revolves around the following lyrics:

“I thought,
Hey, what a way to spend a day
Hey, what a way to spend a day

I made a vow
I wonder now
Am I cut out to spend my time this way?”

As Dance Execs, we have decided to spend our time in certain ways: teaching, choreographing, performing, and directing. In the arts, we are able to create, motivate, and inspire many students through a variety of outlets. We have made a conscious decision to make an impact, and I don’t know about you, but, to me, that is a way to spend a day.
