“Twerking” is not a dance style for children. Plain and simple.

While it may be a pop culture phenomenon, we must filter the content we are choosing to place on our students. That is our duty as dance educators!

The Winnie the Pooh twerking video scandalized Russia, and the government is considering intervening with this case, citing prospective negligence and “debauched action”.

While this is an extreme example, it is an introspective opportunity to re-consider the quality of the content and costumes, especially as it relates to appropriateness of age, in our dance industry… We are all responsible for the content that is placed on stage- parents, students, instructors, choreographers, and studio owners. Let’s do our diligence to guarantee we are being the POSITIVE change.

    Thank you for this! I hope more teachers see this and take note. I do not like to see young children dressed in “straps”. I just don’t see the point in making them sexual objects.
