Recently, I have noticed that children have a harder time learning how to skip. My colleagues and peers have made similar observations.

In my classes, I break down skipping in the following ways:

(1) Begin with a basic march step.

(2) Explain that a skip is a march with a hop.

(3) As students practice, have them recite “up-hop-down. change. up-hop-down.change.”

With time and practice, this will make the student an effective skipper- in and out of the dance studio!
