It is important to teach your students accurate stage direction terminology. This professional knowledge will help them in a variety of situations and performance scenarios.

Here are some helpful teaching tools:

  • Place Stage L and Stage R signs on the mirror, designating the appropriate side of the stage.
  • Play this game: call out the zone/region of the stage (Center Stage Left, Downstage Right, Upstage Center, etc.) and have the students run to the correct zone. Students that go to the accurate spot stay “in” the game; others are “out”.
  • Have students complete a blank stage grid, designating the specific zones. Let them keep this sheet in their dance journal/notebook.
  • Regularly use the terminology when teaching choreography.
