Recently, I received an email from a parent that wishes to pull a child from dance lessons because the child is nervous about going on stage for our year-end performance.
While we want dance to be a SUPER positive experience for everyone that attends, healthy nerves are a part of the process for the performing arts.
Slight nervousness builds confidence, improves presence and public speaking, and encourages well-rounded development of the individual child.
Of course, we understand if students leave IF it is for the right reason. This situation felt slightly less comfortable because the child may miss out on the opportunity to develop a true, genuine love for the performing arts. And, to me, that’s disappointing.
Let’s be okay with slight discomfort and trying new opportunities! Long-term, it will support our growth, personally and professionally.
