Within our dance classes, the levels of the students are varied. Each child is on his/her own journey and will grow and develop at their own, individual pace.
With that being said, as teachers and parents, it is important that we value and praise both effort AND ability.
For example, while it may take one student longer to achieve fully flat and squared off splits, if he/she is consistently working hard and putting forth the effort, he/she should receive praise. We must let them know that we appreciate the work effort, the focus, and the attempt to try. Rewarding this type of behavior will instill the importance of work ethic in our students.
We must teach our students to appreciate the struggle– the amount of work we contribute towards something should be valued at a much higher rate than the immediate outcome.
