With young dancers, it is fun to creatively approach the introduction of plie (to bend). Below are a few variations I use in my teaching:

Plie from Parallel First Position with Hands on Hips

Bend And Stretch Song (to the tune of London Bridge)

Bend and Stretch and Bend and Stretch

Bend and Stretch Bend and Stretch

Bend and Stretch and Bend and Stretch

Bennnndddd annnnnddd Streeeeetch

Plie from Turned Out First Position with Hands on Hips

  • Let The Puppy Out (Bend); Let The Puppy In (Straighten)
  • Open the Book (Bend); Close the Book (Straighten)
  • Diamond Down (Bend); Zip It Up (Straighten)

We also reiterate the concept that plie= to bend. We work on the concept of vocabulary and movement retention on a weekly basis. The students love showing that they remember a skill and its name and movement origin!
