When students request a private lesson, focus on technique. If they are working on a solo or performance piece, work on the technical elements to improve the overall presence of the piece and the proficiency of the dancer. Make the experience a true return on investment.

In the past, we have used private lessons for solo rehearsals. When we shifted to private lessons for technique only (with a separate time assigned as routine rehearsal), the growth of the dancers was evident. They are stronger, more self-aware, and conscious of their strengths, weaknesses, and goals.

This makes the lesson not only a practice- it is an investment in their long-term success versus a short-sighted focus.
