Remember when independent entries entered the scene? It seemed to have all the right intentions, but is that still the case?

Additional experiences and opportunities are great- when they are used for the right reasons and in the right manner.

But, have we, as an industry/society, become so focused on a “win no matter what” attitude that the independent entry that used to be reserved for the student interested in learning and gaining more is now being used to trespass the conventional mode of competing and attending events with a designated studio?

As a result, many events have backed away from entertaining independent entrants.

Other events have set strict rules and designations regarding competition and the required presence of an instructor.

Culturally, why is this happening?

What are your experiences?

And, moving forward, how can we positively utilize or redirect this piece of the competitive dance industry’s puzzle?
