For students, sequencing and remembering choreography may be challenging (especially for younger dancers).

To improve students’ sequencing use the following teaching tool/progression:

  1. Teach and Demonstrate Choreography with Dancers
  2. Call Out Counts and Choreography
  3. Secret Code: The Secret Code phase of learning choreography is a fun exercise for students. On certain sections of choreography, students may have greater difficulty remembering certain moves (e.g. floor work, formation changes, patterns, etc.).  I love implementing gestures and “codes” for a quick reference for students if they need it (e.g. twirling your finger to indicate “form a circle”). They will use the code at first, but, eventually, they will be able to completely execute the choreography and routine without the secret code.
  4. Watching the dancers independently perform and retain choreography!
