(A.K.A. The Adele Phenomenon)
Regional competition seasons have ended, and studios are busy preparing for Nationals and the upcoming competitive season. Each year, it is amazing, and quite a phenomenon, really, to hear the same popular songs used to the point of ad nauseum on the competitive circuit. This list includes, but is not limited to, popular radio songs (how many Adele songs have you heard the past two years?) and songs that have become a permanent staple on the competition circuit. If you are involved in dance competitions in any way, shape, or form, you know exactly what I mean.
So, as you are planning your upcoming season, reiterate the importance of being unique to your dancers. Take care in selecting music that uniquely fits the dancer/style of dance/routine. If you have a strong, artistic, choreographic vision that fits the performers cast in the routine, you will find that you are setting trends instead of following them.
In your opinion, what are some of the most overused songs within your competitive circuit?
