Contact Improv is an important skill/ exercise to practice with your dancers.

Ask students to consider the following principles:

  • Touch
  • Momentum
  • Weight Sharing

Illustrate an example of each, as improvisation can be an uncomfortable/foreign concept for dancers.

Assign an exercise. Challenge the dancers with a framework of direction, but allow the dancers to find their own sense of confidence, space, and movement.

At first, the dancers may hesitate to engage and connect with others. Insist they find their fluidity and connectivity.

Dim the lights and make it a judgement free environment. Allow the dancers time to explore. This will improve their ability to improv, partner, and dance with others.
