Over the years, it is evident that people enjoy having others support their argument or concern.

In presenting their concern, the person may say things like:

  • Everyone feels this way…
  • I have heard this concern from a variety of people…
  • I’m the only one willing to tell you about this so you might want to listen…

When a person tries to pull others into their concern/suggestion/argument, I immediately ask for the names of the others involved so that I may personally have the opportunity to discuss their concern. Usually, the person does not want to provide names (likely because shared concerns do not exist), so I ask the person to please direct his/her friends concerns directly to me, explaining and reiterating that it is the only way to resolve issues.

This allows YOU to be in charge of the situation and helps eliminate the exacerbation of gossip.
